Healthcare professionals have long been known to suffer burnout. Add to that personal and professional struggles associated with a pandemic, and the extreme mental health burden they face is increasingly evident. Many health organizations, including St. Peter’s Health, have placed a priority on mental health to enable healthcare professionals to take better care of themselves, their patients, and recognize any risks associated with suicide. These tactics include better insurance coverage for counseling, free assistance programs, and better trainings for healthcare workers to identify high-risk scenarios. One evidence based training offered to healthcare workers is Question, Persuade, Refer (QPR).

Established through the QPR Institute, (whose mission is to save lives and reduce suicidal behaviors by providing innovative, practical and proven suicide prevention training), QPR teaches three simple steps anyone can learn to help save a life. QPR-trained “gatekeepers” learn how to recognize the warning signs of a suicide crisis and how to question, persuade, and refer someone to help. QPR-trained gatekeepers learn to recognize the warning signs of suicide, know how to offer help, and know how to get help to save a life. Learn more here: QPR Suicide Prevention Training.
